7 Reasons to Go to Real Estate School

by Alison Connors

As a team leader of a successful real estate team, one of the most frequent questions I get asked is if I think going to real estate school would be a good idea.  Honestly, real estate is NOT for everyone but for some agents it is the perfect career.  There are many branches of real estate that having your license is necessary.  Here are 7 reasons you should consider going to real estate school.

  1. You should go to real estate school if you want to be a residential agent. If your dream is to list homes to sell and show buyers beautiful properties, going to real estate school is step UNO.  I have people contact me often to join the team, but we normally do not take agent consultations until a real estate license is obtained.  Once you are in school HUNDREDS of brokers will contact you to join them, remember to think wisely because you don’t want to jump around agencies as joining fees and branded supplies can be pricey.  Take your time and make a good choice.

  2. You should go to real estate school if you want to get into investment real estate. Thinking of becoming a wholesale agent?  Want to be the next flipper on TV?  Having a real estate license will allow you to save commission on your buy and sell of your investment properties.  Some investors (especially larger successful investors) like to outsource this to agents, which we are here to help in those scenarios.  But if you are jumping in to do a couple small flips, that extra $5k-10k commission may be the make or break on your investment.

  3. You should go to real estate school if you want to be a commercial agent. Commercial agents require the same real estate school that residential agents go to complete their courses.  It’s important to understand all aspects of real estate before you find your Niche.  Commercial, unlike residential, typically is more of a 9am-5pm job and it’s quite competitive to get into this niche with many agents that have been around along time doing it.  There are additional courses to take after getting your initial real estate license to help you succeed in the commercial world.

  4. You should go to real estate school if you want to become a rental agent, property managers, short sale agent, foreclosure agent, or sell timeshares. Basically if it involves earning a commission – you need a real estate license.  Like commercial real estate, these niche agents must start with their real estate license.  Most go on to earning niche certifications to best understand and help serve their clients in these market areas.

  5. You should go to real estate school to be a residential agent if you want flexibility in your schedule, but this doesn’t mean to work less if you want to be successful. I find myself working many early mornings, late nights, and weekends because this is when my clients are available.  I’m not sure in 10years if I’ve ever had a 9am-5pm day in the office though, which for my personality is more ideal.  I like being in the field, showing homes, and I’m OK with working til 7pm some nights or early morning Saturday and Sunday’s.  This lifestyle isn’t for everyone though, if you don’t like a day you can’t predict, real estate school may not be for you.

  6. You should go to real estate school if you want unlimited earning potential. Real estate agents can have a very rewarding career when they treat their job like a business.  The most successful agents run millions of dollars in revenue and have large profits year over year.  This doesn’t come easy but with hard work and determination, this is a job it is possible to do.  You should go to real estate school if you want a job that does not have an income cap.

  7. You should go to real estate school if you want true independence. I have found with real estate I went from being nothing to my own boss overnight.  Real estate is a job personally brings intrinsic motivation, but for many it’s the external products and pressures that drive them.  Whatever it is, you will be on your own to determine how to succeed.  If you are a self-motivator, going to real estate school may be a good idea for you!

There are many different real estate schools available but it is most important to verify with your state that the school you select offers an approved course to be eligible for your license.  In FL, you can verify this on the DBPR website.   I’ve found Groupons for courses as low as $60, but typically find the real estate course to be priced around $300.  If you have any questions about real estate school or career, please reach out.  The Connors Team is always growing and would love to be in your consideration to for your next career move!
